The UKLASH Lowdown: Battling Cancer With Beauty At The UKLASH & Look Good Feel Better Event - UKLASH

The UKLASH Lowdown: Battling Cancer With Beauty At The UKLASH & Look Good Feel Better Event

For the month of October, we partnered with cancer charity, Look Good Feel Better, to celebrate their 30-year anniversary and mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Look Good Feel Better is an incredible charity that works tirelessly to support those living with cancer, boosting confidence through hair and beauty solutions. They often hold workshops to offer a safe space for discussing hair loss during cancer and give advice on topics such as styling tips to boost confidence, hand and nail care during cancer, hair loss during cancer and tips for makeup and skincare through cancer.
Our partnership felt natural given our commitment at UKLASH to support our community through every age and every stage of life. This is why, as well as supporting them throughout the year by getting involved in charity walks and donating, we decided to host a workshop with experts giving beauty advice and tips and tricks to those living with cancer.

beauty workshop for cancer patients
So, Wednesday morning, we invited 15 of the charity’s beneficiaries to come along as well as GP and Medical Educator, Dr Raj and Celebrity Make-Up Artist, Emily Wood. We served up a delicious breakfast buffet and gifted attendees UKLASH goodie bags, while Dr Raj let everyone know how to best care for their lashes, brows, skin, and hair during cancer treatment and Emily Wood held a brow drawing masterclass.
We want to spread this advice far and wide, so below we’ve pointed out a few of the highlights from the experts on how to boost your confidence during cancer treatment and feel as much like ‘you’ as possible…

Insight from Dr Raj - Skincare Tips & How to Combat Lash, Brow, and Hair Loss During Cancer Treatment

As one of the UK's leading medical educators, Dr Raj truly understands how cancer can affect a patient's physical and mental well-being - including the knock-on effect it has on confidence and self-esteem. She spoke at length about how your skin, lashes, brows and hair can be affected by cancer and various cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, and was there to answer any questions the attendees had. She was also kind enough to share some top tips and tricks for looking after your lashes, brows and hair during your cancer journey, and how, by taking extra care throughout the process, you can speed up the hair re-growth process….

○ Eat A Balanced Diet - She spoke about the importance of having a diet filled with protein and vegetables and how this has a huge impact and can stimulate healthy hair growth. After all, our hair follicles are around 80-85% protein content, therefore by making sure you’re taking a lot of this in, either through diet or through supplements such as the nutritious UKHAIR Hair Vitamins, you can help your body intake all the protein it needs to build longer, stronger and healthier hair. Eggs contain high levels of biotin and protein and are important to incorporate into your diet, as well as lean meats, legumes, dairy products and dairy alternatives.

○ Protect Your Skin’s Natural Barrier - When going through cancer, treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can dry out your skin and make it sensitive, more sore, and vulnerable to infection. Always consult your doctor before introducing any new skincare products into your routine, and look out for skincare that is geared towards those with sensitive skin - these formulas will be gentler and easier for your skin to process.  It’s really important to stay moisturised to protect your skin’s natural barrier - look out for soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients in products such as Vitamin B5(Panthenol) and Shea Butter which will help to deeply nourish and moisturise the skin.

○ Take Time To Relax & Soothe - During cancer and any accompanying treatments, both physically and mentally, your body goes through a lot! It’s important to take time where possible to sit back and do something that makes you feel good, like watching your favourite TV programme or reading a book. Some people may also experience issues with their thyroid gland during certain types of chemotherapy, which can lead to puffiness in the face, hands and feet. Whilst you’re taking time to wind down in the evenings, why not try the UKLASH Hydra-Gel Eye Patches? They’re packed with antioxidants and multiple weights of Hyaluronic Acid which can help to reduce puffiness and create a soothing effect for your under-eye area.

○ Use Hair Growth Serums - UKLASH’s range of lash, brow and hair growth serums can be a great way to maintain and regrow your hair after chemotherapy. They’re packed with active ingredients that work to stimulate growth at the root and nourish the hair that’s already there, helping you to achieve healthy regrowth in your lashes, brows and hair as soon as possible. How To Draw On Eyebrows During Cancer From Celebrity Makeup Artist Emily Wood

Emily truly understands how eyebrows have the power to frame your face, and knows that losing them during cancer treatment can be so difficult and can really have a knock-on effect on confidence and your self-image. During her workshop, she stressed how makeup is a personal experience and that, if you are struggling with losing your eyebrows through chemotherapy, it’s important to take some time to look into how you can draw them on whilst growing back your eyebrows. She loved using the UKBROW Brow Pencil on the attendees during the workshop due to the ultra-fine tipped pencil that draws on realistic, hair-like strokes. Below she outlines a simple eyebrow-drawing routine:

1. Draw - First, take your pencil and use a method like brow mapping to find where your brows should start, arch and end. To learn more about finding your perfect brow shape, head to the article here. Then, finely strike your brow area with your pencil to create short, hair-like strokes in sparse areas where you’d like to add more colour and definition.

2. Reflect - Remember to constantly take a step back whilst drawing on your brows to make sure you’re creating a shape that suits you and that you haven’t made any mistakes - it’s always easier to avoid drawing where you don’t want to go, versus making a mistake and having to remove it.

3. Diffuse - Use the spooly in the dual-ended design of your UKBROW Brow Pencil to brush your brows throughout the process. This will help to diffuse the colour of your brows, making them soft and more natural looking. Repeat these three steps until you have created a brow look that works for you!

Top Tip: Always keep cotton buds handy as they can be a great tool for smudging out product and removing any mistakes you might have made!

Ultimately, Emily wanted to get the message across that each person’s cancer journey is different, and when it comes to drawing on your eyebrows it’s important to take your time, try to enjoy it and use your intuition where possible, drawing on brows that you feel are best for you!
