Understanding Hair Growth

There are three stages in the hair growth cycle; Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.

  • The Anagen Phase is the first step in the cycle. This is when the hair is growing, hence it being referred to as The Growth Phase. The hair then moves into…
  • The Catagen Phase. This is also known as the Transitional Phase as it is when the hair has been disconnected from the blood supply and stops growing. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in this stage at any time for an average of 10 days before moving into…
  • The Telogen Phase, which is also referred to as the resting phase is when the strands stay in their follicles and eventually detach, making way for new growth when the cycle begins again.

Studies show that healthy hair grows at an average rate of around 12-13cm each year. However, the speed at which the hair growth cycle works varies from person to person and can be linked to your health, age, race, diet and hormones.
As we mature, it is normal for follicles to decrease, resulting in hair thinning or loss, and at times in our lives when our hormones are in flux, for example during pregnancy or menopause, this can also have adverse effects on hair growth. The hair cycle can also slow down if we are suffering from an illness or experiencing stress.
At UKLASH we are passionate about supporting hair nutrition and growth throughout all times of your life and have pointed out 10 top tips below on how to keep hair healthy in even the toughest of circumstances.

1. Keep it trimmed
You may think the best way to stimulate hair growth is by simply letting it grow, but you would be wrong. Getting hair cut regularly can rejuvenate the scalp and reduce split ends which in turn improves your hair’s overall health, helping to stimulate growth.
Although your average hairdresser may recommend a trim every 6-8 weeks, hair experts believe it’s best to wait around 12 weeks between cuts, although this will vary depending on hair type and texture.

2. Eat protein-rich foods
One of the best ways to stimulate hair growth is to ensure your body is getting all the vitamins and nutrients it needs through a balanced diet.
Protein-rich foods play a vital role in stimulating growth as our hair follicles are mostly made of protein; more specifically a protein called Keratin which makes up around 80-85% of our hair follicles. Consuming biotin and protein can stimulate Keratin production, and in-turn stimulate hair growth. Eggs contain high levels of biotin and protein and are important to incorporate into your diet, as well as lean meats, legumes, dairy products and dairy alternatives.

3. Take hair-boosting vitamins
As previously mentioned, making sure your body is getting all the vitamins and nutrients it needs is a key part to stimulating hair growth. Alongside a balanced diet, taking vitamin supplements can be a great way to ensure this.
Our UKLASH Hair Vitamin gummies are suitable for all as they are naturally flavoured, vegan-friendly and free from dairy, gelatin and gluten. They are specially formulated to include Biotin, Vitamins C and E and Folic Acid; all of which play a key role in stimulating hair growth.

4. Use a proactive Shampoo and Conditioner
Using products that work hard to cleanse and remove build-up on the scalp and protect and strengthen the hair is vital in achieving hair growth - which is where our hair Shampoo and Conditioner come in. Both are made of 97% natural ingredients that help to nourish your hair and stimulate growth. Our Shampoo offers a clinically proven formula that’s built with amino acids and Pineapple Extract to stimulate the scalp and pave the way for optimum growth. Our Conditioner is built with Coconut Extract and amino acids which help to deeply nourish and hydrate strands, whilst Lactic Acid and Vitamin B5 (Panthenol) provide the perfect environment for healthy hair growth.

5. Relax with a scalp massage
Not only can indulging in a scalp massage help to reduce stress; a well-known contributor towards stunting hair growth, it also plays a more direct role in creating a thicker and fuller head of hair. By manipulating the blood vessels at the scalp with your fingertips, you are helping to improve circulation and in turn stimulate hair cells and follicles, preventing breakage and encouraging hair growth. Studies have shown that conducting a four-minute scalp massage daily for five months will result in thicker hair - see our recommended routine below:

  1. For added nourishment, first apply 2-5 drops of our Hair Growth Serum.
  2. Apply light to medium pressure on your scalp with your fingertips or massage tool.
  3. Move around the scalp in small circular motions, making sure you reach all areas. If using our Hair Growth Serum, make sure it’s fully dry before following up with our Shampoo and Conditioner.

6. Use a hair mask weekly
Incorporating a hair mask into your shower routine once weekly can help to nourish your hair, giving it all the vitamins and nutrients it needs to prevent breakage and promote growth. Our Hair Mask’s clinically proven formula includes Avocado and Argan Oil, which hydrates and conditions hair follicles, and Coconut Extract; an ingredient full of amino acids, minerals and vitamins which is known to provide optimum nourishment to help hair growth.

7. Avoid using heat
It’s well known that using excessive heat on your hair can cause long term hair damage and breakage. Where possible, avoid hairstyles that require using hot tools and opt for heatless alternatives instead. Wrap your hair using hair rollers or use a heatless curl kit overnight to create a ready-to-go style in the morning that avoids damaging your hair!

8. Colour with caution
A 2021 study found that permanent hair dyes remove the natural fatty acids that make up the hair, resulting in a texture that is weak and easily broken. Where possible, opt for semi-permanent dyes instead that are less harsh on the follicles, or try colouring less frequently to reduce the amount of damage being done to your hair.

9. Secure your hair while you sleep
A lack of sleep may decrease the levels of melatonin in your body; a hormone that plays a vital role in regulating hair growth. As well as this, it helps to secure your hair at night and prevent any damage occurring while you’re asleep. A great way to prevent friction, tangling and breakage is by either sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase or by using a hair wrap or bonnet to protect your hair.

10. Keep a cap on stress
Studies have found that consistent levels of stress have adverse effects on hair follicles, keeping them in the resting phase for longer and therefore increasing your chances of hair loss. It’s important to take time to unwind, in whatever way suits you best. Some suggestions for this could be through exercise, meditation, reading or journaling.

Of all the tips we have mentioned, maybe the most important would be to remember that there's no one-size-fits-all formula for hair growth. The key to maintaining healthy hair lies in adopting a number of the above methods to create a holistic approach that works best for you.
